Don’t compromise on sleep just because you spend a night in the cab. The lower bed is 70 centimetres wide, features 16 centimetres pocket springs and a choice of three different firmness levels. And you can control the interior lights, alarm clock, parking heater, audio system, windows and locks, all without leaving the bunk.

All the familiar Volvo FMX elements are there, just enhanced and improved. The bull bar is tougher and larger, as are the corner bumpers. The central towing device is made from cast iron and can pull up to 32 tonnes. And the new headlights are positioned higher up where they’re less likely to get damaged.

TIME SAVING DESIGN


Notice the exposed fasteners on the corner bumpers and body panels. Not only do they add to the truck’s robust look, they mean you can quickly replace panels yourself. It’s all part of our philosophy of adding value to functionality – and reducing the amount of time you spend in the workshop.

The polypropylene coated steel bumper is built to withstand almost anything you can throw at it (or drive into). You’ve got a choice of two hardcore protectors for your powerful bi-xenon lights. And a 3 millimetre thick skid plate keeps the underbelly intact. So no matter the work, the Volvo FMX just keeps on going.

SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE UPDATES DESIGNED TO SAVE FUEL


Volvo Torque Assist is a new software program included in the upgraded engines, designed to help the driver to operate their vehicle more fuel-efficiently when not using cruise control. The result is that any driver is able to achieve a high level of fuel-efficient driving regardless of their experience and expertise.

In addition, a number of hardware upgrades have also been implemented, to cut fuel consumption even further.

You need a driven front axle. But our research shows you only need it 2–5% of the time. At all other times, you’re wasting fuel. Automatic Traction Control helps you maximise fuel efficiency. When you don’t need the extra traction, the system automatically disengages the front axle, reducing the amount of fuel you use.

BOXY FOR A REASON


The new towing device, the new bull bar, the new skidguard – everything has been connected to the front protection beam with huge brackets. The result is an incredibly sturdy box-like front. Low-speed impacts are absorbed and eigenfrequency is almost completely eliminated – as is the cab shaking that comes with it.

A single piece of cast iron, so strong it can push or pull up to 32 tonnes. So strong that if you’re lying on the axles, wheels spinning, an excavator – or another Volvo FMX – can have you rolling in no time. We tried penetrating the front using a steel post and almost 3 tonnes of pressure. (The boxy construction acts like a spring, almost completely recovering its shape). We drove it into a heavy concrete block. (The steel front flexes slightly, but largely regains its form). And we carried out dozens more of the fearsome impact tests in our repertoire. So when we say that the Volvo FMX is our most robust truck ever, we really mean it.

We also integrated the parallel rod behind the axle beam, making the sturdy axle casing the lowest point of the vehicle and significantly improving ground clearance when fully laden.
